Prof. Dr. Joep Knol is een Nederlandse chirurg die al ruim 30 jaar in België woont en werkt en er ook volledig is opgeleid.
Joep Knol werkte enkele jaren als staflid op de dienst Abdominale Chirurgie van het UZ Leuven en bezocht in die tijd ook jaarlijks de Mayo Clinic in Rochester (USA).
Van 2005 tot 2010, werkte hij in het MZNL te Pelt en vervolgens in het Jessa ziekenhuis te Hasselt (2010-2020) , waar hij de laatste jaren diensthoofd was van de dienst Abdominale chirurgie. In 2019 promoveerde Dr. Joep Knol tot PhD door zijn joint-thesis (een samenwerking VU Amsterdam (NL) – UHasselt(BE)) “Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision – Safe Introduction of A New Technique” met succes te verdedigen. In 2020 werd hij als gastprofessor benoemd aan de UHasselt en kreeg hij eveneens een Master aan de Universiteit van Catania, Italië, om les te geven over anatomie van de buik, mn. gericht op minimaal invasieve chirurgie (kijkoperaties en robotchirurgie).
Joep Knol was in 2015 mede-oprichter van de iLappSurgery Foundation. Dit fonds zonder winstoogmerk richt zich op digitale teaching, mn. de ontwikkeling van Apps, om op die manier jonge enthousiaste chirurgen op te leiden in chirurgische technieken. De inhoud van de Apps is zeer vernieuwend en dynamisch; bovendien werkt de wereldtop van de chirurgie er aan mee.
Joep Knol is eveneens Nationaal coördinator voor AIS-channel, een web-based kanaal dat zich ook bezighoudt met digitale teaching.
Vanaf 10-2020 is Joep Knol werkzaam in het ZOL ziekenhuis te Genk, waar hij zich als Kliniekhoofd, Colorectale Chirurgie bezig houdt met de chirurgische behandeling van darmziekten, oa. darmkanker. Hij is ook boardmember van de BSCRS (Belgian Section of ColoRectal Surgery), expert in meerdere nationale en internationale stuurgroepen en reviewer voor meerdere medische tijdschriften.
Joep Knol publiceerde meer dan 40 artikels en ook enkele boekhoofdstukken, en bovendien was hij spreker op verschillende grote congressen op 5 verschillende continenten. Ook opereerde hij meermaals in het buitenland en geeft hij zelf cursussen aan binnen- en buitenlandse bezoekers.
Joep Knol opereert zowel in het ZOL ziekenhuis te Genk, alsook in het ziekenhuis te Maaseik.

Samenvatting thesis
Hoewel de behandeling van rectumkanker multimodaal is, is een correcte en verzorgde oncologische resectie cruciaal. De introductie van de totale mesorectale excisie (TME) en de wijdverspreide opleiding erin, hebben een belangrijke impact gehad op de resultaten van de chirurgie van rectumkanker, met als gevolg dat het de gouden standaard werd voor de curatieve resectie van rectumkanker.
De transanale totale mesorectale excisie (taTME) is ontwikkeld om een aantal problemen, gerelateerd aan het opereren in de diepte van het bekken, op te lossen, vooral ter verkrijging van een meer compleet resectie specimen in vergelijking met de enkel langs de buik uitgevoerde TME- procedure. Wel is het zo dat deze nieuwe en technisch moeilijke procedure een gestructureerde training en opleiding vereist om veilig te kunnen implementeren als onderdeel van een totaal opleidingsplan.
